Roughly 50 vehicles have been marked with what appears to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Cars, walls and postboxes were defaced, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they stated in a statement.
Officers say they were contacted during the night on Wednesday, when a resident observed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored substance.
The fluid had been placed in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Police then found many other smeared automobiles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials state preliminary tests indicate the fluid was most likely human bodily fluid.
"Currently there is no lead as to its source; investigators are not yet cognizant of any harm in relation with the occurrence," they commented.
Municipal representatives stated they were trying "to unravel the incident" and have appealed to the residents for information.
An important representative stated the incident left him without words and required to be resolved quickly.
"This event hits the center of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the far-right violent incident five years ago," he wrote on social media, referring to the murder of nine people by a gunman aiming at residents of migrant background in 2020.
