The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
This row threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
